EP-3 Echoplex preamp circuit in pedal UPDATE/CLIPS!

Postby harddriver » Sat Dec 08, 2007 3:06 pm

Hey guys I originally posted this in the EVH forum but I think this would be applicable to anyone looking for the EP-3 coloration in their tone.

Here's the info on it Dan.

viewtopic.php?t=15296

Peter Clinch of Clinchfx in Austrailia is making them, I contacted him and posted the link on the EVH forum but I think this could work equally well for just about anyone who wants that EP-3 preamp coloring in their tone, seems like a really cool concept. I have a prototype coming hopefully next week and he has some out for beta testing to get feedback on them.

You can go to his site and click on the news section for his update.

www.clinchfx.com

I told him I posted this on our forums and thought there might be quite alot of interest in them.

Drop him a message on his contact page if you're interested. Right now he said there is quite alot of interest in this pedal and the few guitarists that have the proto really like them.

Sounds interesting. I didn't see where it was being sold as a stomp/pedal?

yeah , Hardriver, thanks for posting the info.

I e-mailed this guy , a week ago, to go on the list as well.

that's where I got the EP_3 picture

I think blfrd brought up building the ep-3 preamp a long time ago.

Maybe Peter got the idea from the metro forums.

well looks like he jumped on it first and 139.00 isn't un-reasnoable especially if it does a good job emulating the preamp circuit

I have a theory that EVH used 2 Ep-3's in series for some extra mojo..
not necessarily for a backup unit.

This will help me test the theory without dropping $400.00+ on another echoplex.

Has anyone else heard the rumour of Dunlop doing a re-issue of the Echoplex ??

I saw it mentioned on another forum recently. just curious.

Hi guys, I'm Peter. I don't know anything about spamming rules here, so I'll just comment on where I got the idea.

There was a post at TGP months ago, about the great tone of an EP-3 preamp. I took a look at the schematic and my first thought was that there was no way that such a simple circuit could generate such great tone. The guy who posted seems to be sensible, so I built a preamp. I didn't just do a "cut and paste" from the schematic, but tried to emulate the load and power supply characteristics that affect the preamp in its original form. When I tried it with a guitar, I was blown away by the tone I got from this pedal. It has all taken off from there.

Thanks, harddriver, for posting this thread.

Stan, I had a business where I worked on lots of tape gear including Echoplex, Roland Space Echo and various reel to reel machines including 2 inch 24 track. I bought a small lathe so that I could make mechanical parts that were no longer available for some of the older Tascam reel to reel recorders. It's now years since I've worked on any of that gear, but there are some things you don't forget.

Thanks guys, the funny thing is that I didn't really set out to make a big thing of this. I had the prototype sitting around for months before I was prompted by a follow-up PM from a TGP member, and a post on HRI by a young guy who heard the proto at an ampfest here.

I'm surprised that nobody else has managed to build something like this before. I don't see myself as an electronics genius - just a guy who has been lucky enough to have thorough training and some great experiences in electronics. Some of the guys I've worked for and with have been brilliant engineers and great teachers. I take pride in learning something new every day. Also, I like a challenge, particularly if it has some relationship to guitars.
